Program Description

Tropical Rainforest & Reef Ecology (BIOL 412/610):
During Maymester 2017 The Citadel Biology department will be leading a 10-day course in Tropical Rainforest and Reef Ecology to the Caribbean island nation of Trinidad and Tobago. Located in the southern Caribbean, T&T hosts spectacular marine and terrestrial tropical biodiversity.

We will be spending half our time on the island of Trinidad at the Asa Wright Nature Center, a non-profit reserve dedicated to the conservation of Trindad’s birds and forests, and the other half on the island of Tobago at Blue Waters resort. Our time will be spent learning about plant and animal life through hiking jungle paths, swimming under waterfalls, and snorkeling on coral reefs. We will also boat in a mangrove swamp, stroll a sea turtle nesting beach at evening, and lure insects at night with lights. The option for SCUBA diving (at extra cost) will be available to those who are certified.
