Program Description

Academic Program:

All students must enroll in the three-credit hour class, HIST 39101, Special Topics in Military History: The U.S. in World War I To pass this class, a student must make the spring break trip to France. For history majors, this class will count as a Group 4, Military/Diplomatic History elective. Only at the discretion of the chairman of the Department of History can the course be substituted for another elective classification. The class will appear on the schedule as meeting MW 1430 to 1545. Although the intention of the course is to deliver most content during the spring break trip, the class will convene at the professor’s discretion during the scheduled hours during the semester to prepare for the trip, hear lectures, and discuss various reading assignments. The trip itself will consist of an intensive series of staff rides/tours of battlefields, museums, and cemeteries, tracing the military history of the United States in World War I with special emphasis upon the actions of Citadel graduates. All operations and logistics will be handled through the contracted vendor, Military History Tours.

Prerequisites:

Full-time undergraduate students (i.e. cadets, day-students, and MECEPs) who meet the following qualifications may apply:

Be classified no less than an academic 3B
Possess a cumulative GPA of no less than a 2.0

Credit:

Students will receive three-credit hours of credit upon the successful completion of the trip and all assignments associated with the class and listed in the syllabus.

Transportation and Lodging:

All transportation and lodging will be coordinated by Military History Tours prior to departure. Students do not have the option of flying or lodging separately from the rest of the group as provided by the vendor. Baggage fees and transportation to and from the Charleston Airport is the responsibility of the individual student.
Registration and the waiting list:

All students must complete their application to participate in the class through the Study Abroad Program to be eligible to enroll in the class. Should the application not be completed by November 17, the student will be dropped from the class. Similarly, should students not make the below listed deadlines for the payment of the deposit and the balance, they will be dropped from the class. Should there be a waiting list, student selection to fill vacated slots will be prioritized according to academic seniority and the history major.
