Program Description

COURSE OFFERINGS

HIST 391- Special Topics in Military History: World War II in Italy - 3 credits

*Note: This course is a semester-long course offered during the Spring 2018 term with an embedded/required spring-break travel component. For history majors, this class will count as a Group 4, Military/Diplomatic History elective. Only at the discretion of the chairman of the Department of History can the course be substituted for another elective classification.

Student Learning Outcomes:
-The primary objective of this class is to create an interactive, or experiential, learning experience for the study of World War II. This builds upon other offerings in the Department of History that allow students to see the terrain and visit museums that are directly applicable to a particular subject, especially military history. The trip to Italy gives students a hands-on sense of the history they are studying.
-The study of history is a time-honored tool in leadership development. Whether it is studying how soldiers, from privates to generals, adapted and overcame obstacles or how they planned and led other soldiers in battle, military history provides a blue print for future leaders to understand different models of leadership and behavior.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

This program offers students an opportunity to bring historical material to life by means of an intensive study of the United States Army in Italy during World War II. The trip itself will consist of a series of tours of battlefields, museums, and cemeteries, tracing the military history of the United States in World War II with special emphasis upon the actions of Citadel graduates.

-Students will have the opportunity to engage in the following activities:
*Visit to Citadel's wartime dead with visits to their grave sites at the ABMC cemeteries at Rome and Florence
*Touring battle sites at Salerno, Anzio, Monte Cassino and Rome
*Time spent in the following cities: Naples, Salerno, Anzio, Monte Cassino and Florence
