Program Description

COURSE OFFERINGS

PSCI 433 – East Central European Politics – 3 credits
HIST 339 - Special Topics in European History - 3 credits

Students will earn 6 credits by participating in this program


PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Under the direction of Dr. Kapeluck, students will take two three-credit hour courses in Prague, Czech Republic. Dr. George Hays of the Anglo-American University in Prague will teach a course on the government of the Czech Republic and the politics of the Central European region to include Germany, Russia and the Balkans. . Dr. Jason Bell, an American professor living in the Czech Republic, will teach a course on the History of Czechoslovakia, 1918-1993. Students will have the opportunity to listen to guest speakers including Dr. Jason Bell's wife, who will provide a discussion of life growing up in communist Czechoslovakia and a comparison of Czechs and Americans. Other guest speakers include Ondrej Benesik, the current Chairman of the Czech European Affairs Committee, who will discuss the current political situation in Europe, including the Czech relationship with the European Union. Students will have the opportunity to take excursions and interact with other international students during their time in the Czech Republic.

What is expected

The students will gain an appreciation of the history and politics of the Czech Republic and Central Europe. Students will gain international awareness through engagement with international students in student accommodations in Prague and living in one of Europe's most beautiful and highly-visited cities. Classes will run for three hours each day with no class on Friday. Students are encouraged to make the most of their time in Europe on these long weekends. We are literally in the center of Europe. Students last year took weekend trips to Barcelona, Berlin, Bucharest, Rome, Vienna, Salzburg, and Jerusalem (!).

Dr. DuBose Kapeluck lived in Central Europe for ten months (2012-13) on a Fulbright in Ljubljana, Slovenia. During that time, he visited the Czech Republic and a number of other countries in Central and Eastern Europe. He accompanied 29 students to Cyprus in the fall semester of 2016. Dr. Kapeluck took three cadets on a week-long trip to Qatar in May of 2017. He took 14 Citadel cadets to Prague in the summer of 2018 for a month-long stay.
