Program Description

Due to Covid-19, this program has been cancelled. Please communicate with your program director(s) if you have any questions regarding program cancellations or refunds.

The current study abroad program will provide students with the unique opportunity to travel to Iquitos, Peru, which is considered the capital of the Peruvian Amazon. Iquitos is the largest city in the world that is inaccessible by road, with travel by air or boat only. Because of its unique location, Iquitos is the gateway city to the Amazon Jungle, and thus perfectly positioned for the core component of this study abroad experience: research in the Peruvian Amazon.

One of two weeks of this program will be spent in Iquitos, Peru (see syllabi for Iquitos activities). Additionally, students will spend one week in the Peruvian Amazon Jungle, one of the most widely diverse locations in the world.

Led by Dr. Audrey Parrish, the students will focus on psychological and biological perspectives relevant to this area. Importantly, Dr. Parrish has conducted research at the Amazon site, led by Dr. Paul Beaver (Amazonia Expeditions), which routinely hosts college student groups and scientists. This study abroad experience will appeal to students interested in gaining experience in the Amazon, providing a total of 6 credit hours to undergraduate Citadel students. Courses include:

Undergraduate Course Credits: Earn 6 credit hours
PSYC 403 - Learning
PSYC 463 - Special Topics (Field Studies in the Peruvian Amazon)
Undergraduate seniors graduating in May 2020 are eligible to atttend
