COURSE OFFERINGS ECON402: The Socialist Economy of Cuba - 3 credits (Undergraduate) ECON750: The Socialist Economy of Cuba - 3 credits (Graduate) *Note: This course is a semester-long course offered during the Spring 2024 term with an embedded/required spring-break travel component. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS This course will teach students how a market economy works in contrast to a non-market economy. Students will also see how a socialist economy works and how it has been implemented and reformed in Cuba. *Some highlights of the program include: - A ride in a classic American car from the 1950s with Nostalgic Cars, a private car services - A visit to La Finca Vigia, the former home of Ernest Hemingway - An afternoon at Playas del Este, the eastern beaches - A visit to the Museum of the Revolution - A walking tour of Old Havana LEARNING OUTCOMES As a result of this course, the student will be able to: - define the characteristics of the three modern economic systems: capitalism, planned socialism, and market socialism - assess economic performance of economies and economic systems - describe the workings of a typical planned-socialist economy - outline the economic history of socialist Cuba - analyze the reforms of both the Fidel Castro and the Raul Castro regimes and the very new Díaz-Canel regime - offer predictions about Cuba's economic prospects DEPOSIT DEADLINE Once given instructor permission to join the course, students will be given a link to pay a program deposit. Deposits will be due NO LATER THAN December 1, 2023. NOTES AND RECOMMENDATIONS -If you do not have a passport, you will need to apply for one ASAP (and expedite it).
