PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Citadel UCESCO Medical Camp

The Citadel Summer in Kenya Healthcare Study Abroad Program is a life-changing experience!

Designed primarily for Pre-Health students, this service-based program involves being part of The Citadel Medical Camp, the largest free general medicine provider in Nairobi, Kenya. Since the first camp opened in 2022, Citadel students have helped treat over 10,000 patients while also getting hands-on, unique global healthcare experience.

The Citadel Medical Camp

As part of The Citadel Medical Camp, students will spend 3 weeks in Nairobi (the capital of Kenya), serving impoverished populations in the major slum areas. Students will work alongside Kenyan and American clinicians in partnership with the non-profit organization United Cultural Empowerment and Social Community Organization (UCESCO). Students will acquire 150+ clinical service hours through the following available medical rotations:

- Primary Care (w/medical specialties)

- Dental Medicine

- Clinical Lab Testing

- Triage

- Pharmacy/Medicine Dispensary

- Nursing/Treatment

- Electrocardiogram (EKG)/Sonography

- Physical Therapy

All medical work completed by the students will be under the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) guidelines for students. Students will not be directly involved with any medical procedures. They will assist with routine jobs, such as taking vitals and weight, height, blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature measurements. They can provide educational sessions regarding health, nutrition, and proper sanitation. They can also treat minor injuries and wounds, provided all care is external and superficial.
