PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Citadel UCESCO Medical Camp The Citadel Summer in Kenya Healthcare Study Abroad Program is a life-changing experience! Designed primarily for Pre-Health students, this service-based program involves being part of The Citadel Medical Camp, the largest free general medicine provider in Nairobi, Kenya. Since the first camp opened in 2022, Citadel students have helped treat over 10,000 patients while also getting hands-on, unique global healthcare experience. The Citadel Medical Camp As part of The Citadel Medical Camp, students will spend 3 weeks in Nairobi (the capital of Kenya), serving impoverished populations in the major slum areas. Students will work alongside Kenyan and American clinicians in partnership with the non-profit organization United Cultural Empowerment and Social Community Organization (UCESCO). Students will acquire 150+ clinical service hours through the following available medical rotations: - Primary Care (w/medical specialties) - Dental Medicine - Clinical Lab Testing - Triage - Pharmacy/Medicine Dispensary - Nursing/Treatment - Electrocardiogram (EKG)/Sonography - Physical Therapy All medical work completed by the students will be under the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) guidelines for students. Students will not be directly involved with any medical procedures. They will assist with routine jobs, such as taking vitals and weight, height, blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature measurements. They can provide educational sessions regarding health, nutrition, and proper sanitation. They can also treat minor injuries and wounds, provided all care is external and superficial. Weekend excursions and activities bookend weeks at The Citadel Medical Camp. These are listed below under Program Highlights. COURSE DESCRIPTION Students will enroll for a total of 6-7 credit hours. EXSC 406 - Directed Field Experience (3 credits)(counts as a ROTC fulfillment) EXSC 421 - Seminar in Health, Exercise, and Sport Science (1 credit) LDRS 433 - Leadership in Global Health (3 credits)(counts as a ROTC fulfillment) HESS 542 - Practicum in Health, Exercise, and Sport Science (graduate course)(3 credits) HESS 507 – Special Topics: Global Health (graduate course)(3 credits) PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Weekend in Mombasa including: - A stay in the Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa Weekend in Nairobi including: - Visit to the Giraffe Centre - Visit to Kenyatta University - Visit to a Nairobi high school Weekend at the Masai Mara Safari: - A stay in the Sarova Mara Game Camp - Visit to the Masai Mara National Reserve - Masai Village cultural experience APPLICATION NOTE Because of the large number of applications typically received for this program, an essay will be required as part of the selection process for the limited number of program seats. Within the application process, applicants must submit an essay addressing the prompt: “Why do you want to be part of the Citadel Summer in Kenya Healthcare Study Abroad Program?” Essays must use the following format: Submitted as a Word document or PDF. Use Size 12 Times New Roman or Arial font. Double spaced. Page limit of 2 pages. GENERAL NOTE If accepted for the Citadel Summer in Kenya Healthcare Study Abroad Program, a non-refundable $300 deposit is required.
