Program Description

The Citadel Summer in London Program is a six-week program that offers a range of international cultural experiences and courses unavailable to students at their home institutions. Students take two courses and earn six credits. The program draws students from other colleges and universities in addition to The Citadel, and there is no military or uniform component. (In other words, the program is just like a regular civilian college program, but even better because it's in London.) Students from schools such as Duke University, Vanderbilt University, Tulane University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of South Carolina, the University of Alabama, Florida Atlantic University, Rollins College, the College of Charleston, Charleston Southern University, and Converse College have participated in the program along with Citadel students.

Students take two of the following three courses: Understanding Civilizations: Islam and the West (PSCI 433/HIST 365), Major British Authors II: Romanticism to Present (ENGL 202), and Literary Monsters in British Literature (ENGL 401). All courses are officially Citadel courses, which means they count toward Citadel major requirements, count toward Citadel graduation requirements, and count toward a student's Citadel G.P.A. Students from other colleges and universities can easily transfer credits to their home institutions. Citadel students can use ENGL 202 to fulfill a core course requirement and Citadel students who are not Political Science majors, History majors, or English majors can still earn general elective credits for Islam and the West and/or Literary Monsters in British Literature instead of taking another general elective on campus at The Citadel.

All courses take full advantage of England's cultural resources by including learning activities such as literary London tours; tours of Muslim areas and Islamic cultural sites; a guided tour of Parliament; a backstage tour of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre; trips to Stonehenge, the Lake District of England, and the ancient Roman city of Bath; and optional long-weekend trips to other European countries (including Italy, Spain, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Scotland, and Ireland).

Because London is the largest city in Europe, there are almost endless opportunities for extracurricular activities such as attending live music performances (from small club shows to huge outdoor concerts at Wembley Stadium and in Hyde Park); attending theater performances (London is widely regarded as the theater capital of the world); attending screenings of a wide range of movies (London's film scene is excellent, and it's not unusual for films to premiere in London months or even years before they make it to America); visiting amazing museums (admission to all public museums, including world-class facilities such as the British Museum and the National Gallery, is free thanks to the British government); and attending sports events (students have attended World Cup qualifying games for England's national soccer team at Wembley Stadium, home games of England's national rugby team, and the Wimbledon tennis tournament, for example).
